Story of a grandma from Indonesia

Aunt Lian from Medan, Indonesia, was diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease at a young age, and came to Taiwan 30 years ago for heart valve surgery. Aune Lian is seeking another heart valve surgery 30 years after, as she wished her surgery to be performed by the same attending physician – who he had switched to Far Eastern Memorial Hospital. Aunt Lian’s family member immediately contact International Medical Center for assistance. Although the doctor who performed the surgery 30 years ago has retired, however, one of his students is still practicing at the Cardiovascular Surgery Division, and he became the one for aunt Lian’s treatment this time. Initially, in order to understand aunt’s situation better, our team arranged video telemedicine to engage with each other before flying to Taiwan. After Auntie arrived in Taiwan, our Indonesian colleague thoughtfully provided translation and services for every process from before hospitalization to after discharge. This was a memorable trip for aunt Lian and her family, as it was not only to re-visit the familiar place long after, but to experience a smooth & friendly service.

Advanced cell therapy for a lady from Myanmar

Ms. Yang from Myanmar has been suffering from Osteoarthritis for many years. She visited Taiwan several times for treatment, such as artificial joint replacement and osteotomy, but her joint pain has not improved. It was not until she saw the autologous adipose stem cell therapy provided by the Department of Orthopedics, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, that Ms. Yang finally decided to come to Taiwan again during the COVID-19 pandemic. "Adipose-derived stromal cells" refer to a type of autologous stem cell therapy that is known for remarkable differentiation capabilities and robust cell proliferation potential. These cells possess the ability to differentiate into various cell types, making them crucial contributors to tissue and organ repair. Ms. Yang and her husband were required to do a 14-day hotel quarantine before coming to the hospital. After undergoing arthroscopy and other preliminary examinations, the medical team took adipose tissue in Ms. Yang's knee joint and cultivated adipose stem cells in the laboratory for one month. One month later, the stem cells were injected into Ms. Yang's knee. The treatment was successful, and her osteoarthritis gradually improved. In addition to walking more smoothly and experiencing reduced pain, more importantly, she regained her confidence and happiness.

Precision radiotherapy treating breat cancer effectively

Maggie, a woman from Mauritius, was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. She underwent breast-conserving surgery in her home country. However, since Mauritius does not have the technology for radiation therapy, Maggie decided to come to Taiwan with her family for treatment to reduce cancer recurrence risk. The Department of Radiation Oncology arranged for Maggie to receive stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). This technology uses modern image guidance for precise radiation alignment and delivers treatment in fewer sessions. In the initial stage, a treatment team composed of attending physicians, specialized nurses, and medical physicists created a personalized treatment plan for Maggie. This included assessing the radiation dose based on her physical condition and using a fixation device for precise positioning. Subsequently, radiation therapy was administered weekly according to the precisely positioned results, and Maggie was also scheduled for follow-up visits to the Department of Radiation Oncology for examinations such as breast ultrasounds. Maggie recovered well after the treatment. She was very satisfied with the precise radiation therapy technology, and was also very grateful that the hospital accepted them to come to Taiwan for treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic.
